Counting Game

I have to be creative in counting activities to keep Caleb’s attention. This is a counting game that we like to play.

Materials:
1. Counting cards
2. Number line for each player
3. Counters (we used pompoms and glass stones)

How to play:
1. Put the counting cards face down. Players take turns getting a counting card and counts the dots on the cards.

2. Then, the player puts the corresponding number of stones on the number line to match the number on the counting card.

3. The winner will be the player who reaches the end of the number line first.

Animal Action Dice

I made these using Caleb’s building toys. We took turns rolling them and acting out feelings and making animal sounds. This was a fun way to teach feelings and play pretend at the same time!

Here’s Caleb as a surprised tiger.

Another way we do animal actions is by using this book by Karen Pandell and Art Wolfe.

It has wonderfully clear pictures of animals and children imitating them. Easy for Caleb to “read” and copy even when I’m busy doing other things.

How about you, what do you like to do for pretend play with your kids? Any recommendations? I would love to hear from you!

Egg Bombs

My family loves to eat eggs! Normally, I throw away the eggshells. But instead of heading straight for the trash, I decided to keep these for Caleb to play with. It took me two weeks to collect all the eggshells and I found this wonderful recipe for making wet chalk on the net.

For the recipe I used:
Two cups of water
1/2 cup cornstarch
Food coloring

Caleb helped me stir the water and cornstarch together.

We poured the mixture into little bowls and added one drop of food coloring.

We funneled them into the eggs.

All set for some egg bomb action!!!

Caleb threw the egg bombs on the driveway.

And stomped on the eggshells that didn’t break.

Here’s the egg splat art that resulted before Caleb hosed it all away.
