Long and Short

Caleb wanted to do some “studying” but I wasn’t able to prepare for homeschool since we just got back from holiday and I was still on holiday mode. Anyway, here is our instant homeschool activity! Grouping and comparing long and short straws.
I cut the straws and Caleb sorted them by length and stuck them on play doh.

All done!

Caleb did this activity quite fast and wanted to do more! I guess he really missed our study time. So I gave him some popsicle sticks to sort.

He described the sticks as fat and thin.

When Caleb was done, he still wanted to do some more so I challenged him to use the sticks to make a cage for his dinosaur. This took some time for him to figure out and had some help from me ๐Ÿ˜‰

He was happy with his creation.

Sock Counting

Simple counting can be fun! All you need is a sock and some counters that are big and easy to feel. We used glass stones.

I told Caleb to close his eyes while I put some stones into the sock. Then, I asked him to feel how many stones were inside the sock.

Feel counting. Exploring his sense of touch.

CALEB: There’s only two!

He checked the sock to see if there were really two stones inside. He was so happy to find out that he was right.

CALEB: Let’s do it again!

I had no problem with that, whatever gets him to practice counting. ๐Ÿ™‚

Salt Writing

We tried salt writing for the first time today. I felt that Caleb was ready to try writing letters since he could already sound out both uppercase and lowercase letters.
Materials:
1. Container for salt – I used a cake pan
2. 1/4 cup of iodized salt
3. Flash cards

Started with an easy letter. Lowercase letter “L”. Then I let Caleb choose what letter he wanted to do next. He chose “V”. Here he is writing it.

He also wrote “C” for Caleb. We just did those three letters and he just wanted to draw scribbles on the salt. I didn’t push him to do more letters since the main objective was to have fun and learn at the same time. We can try other letters next time ๐Ÿ™‚

This activity can get messy, so make sure to do it in a place that’s a breeze to clean up. I had to find out the hard way. HAHAHAHA! Activity was fun and delicious for Caleb ( since he loves all things salty).
